Professor serving in Afghanistan resigns over email

It’s refreshing when a professor at one our predominately left-wing universities demonstrates a streak of character, but not surprising that it comes from within the military.

A professor of law, serving in Afghanistan resigned his position at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts after a fellow professor sent out an e-mail stating that it was “shameful” to send care packages to U.S. troops.

U.S. Army Reserve Maj. Robert Roughsedge resigned in response to fellow law professor Michael Avery’s email regarding troops fighting overseas. Avery said that the school’s collection of supplies for soldiers overseas was shameful “that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings.”

Maj. Robert Roughsedge, who worked as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University prior to deploying to Afghanistan last December, is expected to return home next month.

Avery also wrote that sympathy for American troops in harm’s way is “not particularly rational in today’s world.”

Roughsedge submitted his letter of resignation Monday, telling Boston Fox affiliate WTXF in a telephone interview that the email is “hate speech.”

“It’s basically like a 5-year-old throwing a temper tantrum,” he told the station. “That is not how we teach our students to rationally look at the issues…We want rational adult discourse and that is not something I would tolerate in my class and it is not something the school should tolerate from one of its professors.”

Students and alumni have vigorously complained to the university stating that Avery’s view is not representative of the school community.

In an awkward attempt to avoid criticizing a member of his faculty Suffolk University president and provost Barry Brown issued a statement last week saying the school supported the “free exchange of ideas and robust debate” and respected the “right of our faculty members to exercise academic freedom.”

The school also said it has a proud history of supporting servicemen and women and that the care package drive is receiving a lot of support; nonetheless a narrow-minded professor who believes that men and woman serving overseas, not by choice, but under the orders of their superiors, aren’t worthy of our support remains in the position to spread his left-wing views upon the youth attending Suffolk University. Unfortunately one of the good guys, serving his country, will no longer be included amongst the staff of the school.
