What did we learn in last night’s debate? Not much. While President Obama tried to poke and prod at Mitt Romney, Romney remained calm and didn’t fall for any of Obama’s tricks; it made for a rather boring debate. However we did learn one thing that shouldn’t have been a surprise at all: Chris Mathews of MSNBC has set a new benchmark for Liberal mental meltdown.
Whatever happened to Matthews? The once level-headed journalist has transformed into a radical left-wing loon. Matthews’s mental disintegration can be traced to his move to MSNBC.
The Chris Matthews that worked for Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill was a far different man than what he has become.
Matthews proudly said not so many years ago, “I’m more conservative than people think I am…. I voted for George W. in 2000.
Back in 2000 Matthews’s talk show, “Hardball” could be seen on CNBC, the NBC brand’s financial information network. Now on the ultra-liberal MSNBC Matthews has morphed into something that surely sets Tip spinning in his grave.
Famous for spouting how listening to Barack Obama sent a thrill running up his leg, Matthews has apparently lost all touch with reality.
Last night Chris Matthews decided that you cannot have a disagreement on policy unless race is involved. In one of his most outrageous statements Matthews said the right hates Obama more than they want to destroy Al Qaeda.
“I think they hate Obama. They want him out of the White House more than they want to destroy Al Qaeda. Their number one enemy in the world right now, on the right, is their hatred, hatred for Obama. And we can go into that about the white working class in the South and looking at these numbers we’re getting the last couple days about racial hatred in many cases … this isn’t about being a better president, they want to get rid of this president.” Mathews said.
Matthews’s jaunt into the dark world of Liberal lunacy was perhaps the only entertaining moment of the night.
Obama sneered and threw darts at Romney, while the GOP candidate kept a steady gaze and mellow grin, listening intently to Obama’s attacks. The greatest challenge for the audience was maintaining consciousness. The debate moderator, CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer, set a tone that if bottled would have the makers of Ambien running for the hills.
The outcome was that both sides claimed victory, nothing new came out and viewers are far more likely to be discussing baseball or football than politics around the water cooler today.
The take from debate number three? Obama is desperate. Romney is calm, knowledgeable and probably spending more time considering his cabinet then last night’s festivities.
Perhaps the one takeaway from the debate that might have some legs is Chris Matthews’s rant, which will probably make an appearance in a few GOP ads; of course unless he has enough sanity remaining to issue a quick apology. Alas, apologies from MSNBC hosts are even rarer than Obama passing up a golf outing.
