Mayor Menino Welcomes You To Boston
Freedom of speech and freedom of religion were of such import to the founders of the United States that the very first amendment in the Bill of Rights specifically addresses these two primary tenets of our nation:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The Mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, has chosen to breach the most important principles upon which this nation is built for purely political reasons, vowing to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city because the company’s president spoke out publicly against gay marriage.
Menino is a staunch Liberal and supporter of Gay rights. Apparently Mr. Menino is also just another left-wing radical who believes speech is only free when it’s in harmony with his way of thinking.
Mayor Menino told the Boston Herald on Thursday that he doesn’t want a business in the city “that discriminates against a population.”
Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press this week that his privately owned company is “guilty as charged” in support of what he called the biblical definition of the family.
Apparently discriminating against business owners that hold biblical teachings close to their hearts is quite okay with Mr. Menino; but then again the double-standard is just fine when you know better than the rest of us.
Chil-fil-A issued a statement stating that it strives to “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.”
Menino doesn’t understand that you can treat someone with respect and still disagree with their lifestyle. Had Mr. Cathy stated that Chick-fil-A would not hire a gay person Mr. Menino might have a leg to stand on; however nothing could be further from the truth.
While Chick-fil-A has more than 1,600 stores nationwide, only two of their locations are in Massachusetts, both located in food courts in malls.
Menino stated that he will personally block Chick-fil-A opening any new stores in Boston channeling Frank Rizzo of Philadelphia and Marion Barry of Washington, DC, two other Democratic Party mayors that believed they were above the law.
Menino added that he will not allow Chick-fil-A into Boston unless they change their policy.
Chick-fil-A had already stated that their policy is not to discriminate, so is Menino demanding that Dan Cathy change his personal beliefs? Is Menino now the thought police?
Perhaps Menino should consider looking in the mirror before casting stones at others.
In 2001, Menino personally intervened to help stop a chain drugstore from opening a few blocks from a pharmacy owned by a close friend and political supporter.
In 1993 when running for mayor, Menino pledged to serve “only two terms, and that’s it for me.” In 2001, when Menino ran for a third term, he clarified “I promised I’d serve two terms – in every century.” Menino has now served 5 terms.
In 2008, the Friends of Mary Cummings Park delivered a complaint to the Massachusetts Attorney General alleging breach of charitable trust by the Menino administration which had sought to sell over 200 acres of public parkland for development. According to the Boston Business Journal, Joe Timilty, “the former Boston city councilor and developer who spent time in prison for his part in a 1980s real estate deal gone bad”, was among those interested in acquiring the land from the City. “Timilty at one point looked closely at the Route 128 land owned by Boston, hoping to build an upscale golf community featuring a green surrounded by luxury homes”.
In 2009, the Boston Globe printed an article alleging questionable behavior in Menino’s mayoral campaign race. The article reported several instances of questionable behavior, including more than one case of Menino’s associates monitoring Michael F. Flaherty’s Facebook affiliations. According to the article, the Menino campaign sent out a campaign memo containing the name of at least one small business owner who supported Flaherty.
In 2011, Menino’s former mayoral opponent, Michael F. Flaherty, alleged that his former running mate Sam Yoon had to leave Boston after running against Menino because the mayor’s allies made it difficult for Yoon to find a job locally.
While frequently entertaining it’s always repulsive when Liberal politicians deem themselves the arbiter of right and wrong as they skirt the very laws they are pledged to uphold; these sanctimonious snake oil salesmen can only see the wrongs committed by those who don’t share their political agenda. Mayor Menino is the poster child for the elitist Liberal demagogues and, frankly, the people of Boston have elected this self-righteous excuse for a mayor five times, so they utterly deserve what they’ve got.
