Amidst everything going on in Egypt the past few weeks, somehow slipping through the cracks was the Obama administration’s top-to-bottom overhauling of the dietary recommendations for Americans.
First of all, why do we need the Obama administration to tell us what or how much to eat? We have doctors and nutritionists to do that. We have University studies galore, many paid for by taxpayers, that assess what we eat. But since Liberals know what’s best for us, it’s best we just get used to it.
According to the Obama administration, Americans need to eat less, eat better and exercise more. Uh, duh! How much did that prize piece of advise cost us?
USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, a noted physician and nutritional expert; Not! says, "The bottom line is that most Americans need to trim our waistlines to reduce the risk of developing diet-related chronic disease."
Every five years, the USDA issues guidelines to replace the faulty guidelines from the prior five years. Remember when eating eggs was like the worst thing you could do? Or maybe you remember when saccharine, AKA Sweet and Lo, was going to send you to a cancer clinic? The USDA will release a new food pyramid in the coming months. Isn’t the food pyramid sort of a static thing? I mean, grains are grains, fruits are fruits, meats are meats. Remember when we were told, about 20 years ago, to reduce our consumption of sodium? Well one of the Obama administrations significant new recommendations is for people 51 and older to reduce daily sodium intake to less than 1,500 milligrams. Get ready for a bland diet! Of course, it’s only for five years.
The guidelines aren’t just about eating less,They push nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables instead of heavily processed foods loaded with added sugars. Americans should eat more fish and other seafood. Another big duh! Like we didn’t know all this. And we’re paying for this sage advice, why?
And the USDA went on to tell us things we all know, but may or may not choose to ignore, like Beef, pork and poultry are bad for us cause they contain bad fats, and seafood, nuts and seeds have good fats
.
We’ve know for about 30 years what it takes to eat a more healthy diet. We’ve probably all moderated our eating, in fact I’m sure Americans in general are eating better. You would’ve never seen a salad at McDonalds back then. Yogurt was something people in Soviet Georgia ate. And the word light meant it wasn’t as heavy. But we continue to get fatter…or so they say. Could it be as we’ve become a more affluent society we’re simply eating more on the run and don’t recognize what or how much we eat? Nothing in the new USDA guidelines does anything to address that. It just continues to tell us what every adult American already knows.
Let’s be honest here. This is all about making us all Vegans. Not that Vegans are bad people. But that’s their choice. I respect it and them. However, if I choose to go to Burger King and order a Double Whopper, it should be my decision.
The Libs are quick to toss out that a woman’s body is her own domain. If she chooses to terminate a pregnancy it’s a personal decision and no one has a right to quibble with what she does with her own body. But the double standard rears it’s ugly head when I choose to eat salty, fatty foods. Give it a break!
I take my advice from my doctor and the latest nutritional information obtained through research. I may or may not follow that advice. But I don’t need the Liberals telling me what I should or should not do.
