Leave it to the Democrats to put someone front and center on their war against guns and large capacity magazines who doesn’t even understand how they work.
Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette started her tenure as the anti-gun leader for the Democrats in the House of Representatives with a catchy slogan, “I’m against large gun magazines because they put the ‘mass’ in ‘mass shooting’.”
Well if you equate a large number of rounds of ammunition in one location alone her statement might have made a little sense, but since DeGette and most large-capacity magazine opponents don’t realize that the difference between one 20 round magazine and two 10 round magazines in a trained killers hands is less than a second, the argument doesn’t hold water.
Sadly DeGette compounded her lack of understanding with a moronic statement about firearms magazines, saying that if enough people use them, eventually the supply will run out.
DeGette’s comments have been a source of mockery from gun advocates and conservatives.
“Rep. Diana DeGette appears not to understand how guns work,” was one response from the National Rifle Association.
“Is she really that ignorant, or does she think WE are?” asked a poster on the conservative website Free Republic.
And a website in her home state wrote, “No, Diana, gun magazines are not expendable. You can reload them. It’s a modern marvel of technology!”
Magazines are easily exchangeable and reloadable; older forms of holding rounds, still in use in a few cases today, clips, serve a similar purpose and are also reloadable and reusable. While there is a physical difference in use they serve the same function.
DeGette’s spokeswoman told The Denver Post after the Congresswoman’s uninformed comments she “simply misspoke in referring to ‘magazines’ when she should have referred to ‘clips.’”
Apparently in DeGette’s offices knowledge and speaking don’t necessarily go together.
DeGette introduced a bill banning large gun magazines in January, and wrote in a press release at the time, “These devices are used to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible and we owe it to innocent Americans everywhere to keep them out of the hands of dangerous people.”
“We don’t even allow hunters to use them — something’s deeply wrong if we’re protecting game more than we’re protecting innocent human beings,” DeGette wrote, though she provided no evidence to her claim that hunters were barred from using large magazines.
DeGette’s comments made the rounds this week engendering responses such as “she exposes the complete lack of understanding of the very thing she is trying to legislate.”
Conservative talk show host Chris Plante tweeted, “Dianna DeGette is Chris’ favorite moron of the day today. She thinks gun magazines can only be used once.”
Colorado State Sen. Greg Brophy called her statements, “stunningly stupid. I would think that if you’re going to sponsor a bill regulating [firearms], you’d at least want to know how they worked.”
At the same gun violence forum in Denver an elderly gentleman posed a question to DeGette, “There may not be one bad guy that comes into my house… I have to change magazines? I am at a serious disadvantage. What about me?”
After arrogantly smirking at his question, DeGette replied, “The good news for you, you live in Denver. The DPD would be there within minutes.”
After waiting a few seconds for snickers from the audience DeGette added, “You’d probably be dead anyway.”
This is the kind of superior, elitist and uninformed rhetoric we’ve become accustomed to hearing from the legislators in the Democratic Party; clearly demonstrating that they have no business addressing any matter involving individual rights.
